One of the most common SEO mistakes in Shopify stores is a noindex tag on collection pages. This means Google doesn't index your product categories, causing you to miss out on enormous amounts of organic traffic.
Why does this happen?
Shopify doesn't add noindex by default, but many themes and apps do. Popular SEO plugins sometimes automatically add noindex to filtered or paginated collection pages.
How to check
- Open a collection page in your browser
- Right-click and choose "View page source"
- Search for "noindex" in the HTML
- If you find it, that page is invisible to Google
The quick fix
Go to your theme settings or the relevant app and disable the noindex option for collection pages. After making the change, verify with Google Search Console that the pages are being re-indexed.
With ScanLytics, we detect this automatically in every audit and mark exactly which pages are affected.
